Tears streaming down my face, steam swirling from the shower and kids banging on the door "mum, we're going to be late for school".
Where did this come from? I really wanted to know.
Moments before jumping in the shower, I was great. I'd been for a run, fed the chickens, embraced the sunrise. We'd had a lovely family game with a side order of breakfast, then a brief shower before the school run (or so I thought).
Yet, here I was. Feeling crap. Destructive thoughts running through my head.
I sent out a plea for help.
And it came.
"Ask yourself: who's is this?"
So I did. Standing in the shower I muscle tested "This originates with me".
And the answer? NO.
Wow. Instantly (as in less than one second) I felt amazing. The tension, sadness and destructive thoughts and tears gone. They were not me. (Well, the tears had been flowing down my face, but the origin of this was not me.)
This was a few years ago, and since then I've had cause to ask myself that question many times. It still helps. In fact it's so helpful it has become my number one go-to question when I find myself in a funk.
I suspect that from time to time you experience something similar - maybe not in the shower with kids banging on the door, but in your own way. Life's going sweet then wham, something broadsides you and self talk chatter takes you on a downward spiral.
So if you get a No to the question, who's stuff are you feeling?
Great question? It's one that I ask myself.
It has been known for a wee while (think mythology, the Bible, folk wisdom) that you inherit beliefs, trauma and feelings, as well as your hair colour and body shape. The last research I read on this indicated that we inherit up to 12 generations of trauma in our DNA, and that it comes through the sperm at conception. (* I also believe it comes through the egg at conception as well -no father bashing here)
If you think about it, that's a lot of ancestors, life experiences and fears as well as awesome attributes that you inherit.
Given that you've had these in your DNA since day one, you may have thought they were yours. They've chatted away to you most of your life. It's a mind shift to allow yourself to consider that you are different to those thoughts. It frees you to choose how you want to be, rather then react on behalf of someone else's issues, however generously they passed them down through your genes.
So what can you do to cut through the funk and break the pattern?
Ask "this originates with me".
How can you do this?
May these assist you as quickly and easily as it helped me that morning in the shower.
